The cadence has a quiet effect worth isolating. A quarterly figure is the number you see; an annual figure is the number you pay. No screen in the purchase flow has any reason to show you the twelve-month sum, and $149 four times reads very differently from $596 once. The Montana Line Item Being Priced

Strip the marketing away and the thing you are buying is a single entry on a public record. Under Mont. Code Ann. § 35-7-105, an entity appoints its registered agent through its filing with the Secretary of State, and that appointment is what the state reads when a court, a creditor, or the Business Services Division needs to reach your company. Montana charges nothing to establish that line and nothing to change whose name sits on it.

There is a Montana-specific reason the line carries weight. This state holds an unusually large population of limited liability companies whose owners live somewhere else. For an owner in another state, the agent's office is the company's only physical presence inside Montana, which means every notice, every summons, and every warning from the Secretary of State arrives at exactly one address. What that address costs per year is a fair question. What arrives from it, and how fast, is the better one.

What $99 Puts Behind That Address

There is no numbered document to hunt for; Montana has issued none since it went electronic in 2017.

The replacement gets appointed first, because the statement has a field for a successor and none for an empty seat. The quarterly subscription gets cancelled last, once your entity record shows the new name. Lining that cancellation up with a quarter boundary is sensible if you would rather not fund weeks you will never use, and it is entirely a matter between you and that vendor.
